LOUISVILLE, KY (August 2, 2026) — Louisville Central Community Centers, Inc. (LCCC) proudly announces the grand opening of the Grand Lyric Theater, marking a transformative cultural milestone in the heart of the Russell neighborhood. Located at 1300 W. Muhammad Ali Boulevard, the new venue represents the visionary redevelopment of
the historic Old Walnut Street campus—transforming a former industrial block into a vibrant community and cultural hub. The theater’s name honors the rich history of “Old Walnut Street,” a once-thriving African American commercial and cultural corridor impacted by 1960s urban renewal.

Event Highlights & Historic Opening
The Grand Lyric’s opening celebration will feature a “big impact week” of programs and events that bring together children, families, business and civic leaders, and cultural icons under a common banner of family and community development.

Beyond the Ribbon: A Call to Action & Operational Sustainability
While the grand opening commemorates the successful completion of major capital development, LCCC is actively pivoting toward long-term operational sustainability. The organization is issuing a formal call-to-action for funding partners, stakeholders, performing artists, producers and community leaders to join a newly formed Operating Advisory Group. This leadership collective will support the ongoing economic viability of the Grand Lyric Theater as a premier magnet for the arts and a catalyst for continued investment across West Louisville.

“This is more than a building; it is a renewed legacy,” states Dr. Kevin E. Fields, Sr., President and CEO of LCCC. “We are transitioning from an industrial past to a creative future, ensuring this theater serves as a stage for community empowerment for generations to come.”

Immediate Release: Legacies Unlimited, Inc presents the WALNUT STREET REVUE “Let the Good Times Roll at the Top Hat Club”

Kentucky Performing Arts
Bomhard Theater
June 13, 2026
7:30 pm

In the 1930’s, 40’s, and 50’s, the old Walnut Street area was the hub of activity for business, professional, and social life for Louisville’s Black community. The Walnut Street “strip” ran from 6th to 13th streets and contained establishments such as a black owned bank, insurance companies, nightclubs, restaurants, funeral homes, beer gardens, doctor & dentist offices, and an array of assorted businesses. More than that, however, it was the ambiance of Walnut Street and its significance to the Black community during the period of racial segregation that makes it memorable.

Walnut Street became known for its entertainment spots which featured Black performers who could perform in front of Black audiences only at Black owned clubs or performing halls. In addition to entertainment, an entire sub-culture developed on Walnut Street which included the business, entertainment and social life of Louisville’s Black community. In short, Walnut Street was the mecca for Black Louisville during the 1930’s, 40’s & 50’s.

In the early 60’s, Walnut Street fell victim to the sledgehammer of urban renewal and block after block of buildings and a people’s heritage was destroyed. But the Walnut Street period was an era of elegance and class. Historians will undoubtedly say that this period was a most significant one in the development of Louisville, especially Black Louisville.

This presentation is dedicated to the memory of Ray Johnson, whom we lost last year. A native of Louisville who lived on Walnut Street. Ray composed and performed the pre-show music, his special tribute to the memory of Walnut Street. Ray worked in New York as a pianist & composer. He was piano accompanist for Jack Parr’s ‘Tonight Show” plus the David Frost and Dick Cavett shows. He toured with major acts nationally before returning to Louisville where he played at Jack Fry’s Restaurant ’s for over 30 years.

As a tribute to the Walnut Street Era, The Walnut Street Revue presents “Let the Good Times Roll at the Top Hat Club” with Jason Clayborne serving as Emcee at the Top Hat Club, vocalist Sonya Hensley and Blues Messenger, Tee Dee Young.

Jason is a recipient of the prestigious Dove Award and has been nominated for the Stellar, Soul Train, Billboard and Grammy Awards. His contributions to Gospel Music are known Internationally.

Sonya has regaled audiences in 59 countries and has performed with mega stars such as Ricky Martin, Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Buffett Norman Conners, Rose Royce and Raphael Martos of Spain. Best known for her film work in “The Cotton Club”, “Glitter” and television’s “It’s Showtime at the Apollo”, “The Sopranos” and countless commercials. She is a Louisville native and a graduate of Louisville’ Performing Arts School. (YPAS) and is delighted to take part in the legacy of the Walnut Street Revue. She will be accompanied by the Dave Clark Sextet.

Tee Dee Young hails from Lexington, KY and was born with “blues in his blood.”

He was named International Blues Finalist by the Blues Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee and Best Blues Band in the state of Kentucky by the Kentucky Blues Society. He was named “Beale Street Blues King.” and inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in 2022. Tee Dee brings his exciting and seasoned blues band to this year’s Walnut Street Revue.

`The Walnut Street Revue will take you back to the days when Walnut Street was “the place to be & be seen” and give you a “feel” for what it was like to spend a Saturday night at the famous Top Hat Club.

This event will take place in the Kentucky Performing Arts Center’s Bomhard Theater on Saturday, June 13th, 2026. Tickets are available at the Kentucky Performing Arts Center Ticket Office and Better Days Records on Barret Avenue.

This event is made possible through the generous support of:

LESLIE PRYOR PRODUCTIONS ENLARGING THEIR REACH TO CATER TO MORE COUNTIES IN KENTUCKY WITH THE FIRST STOP IN LEXINGTON

THE TOUR WILL NOT ONLY ENTERTAIN BUT EDUCATE BY BRINGING AWARENESS TO MENTAL HEALTH

(Louisville, Ky) Leslie Pryor Productions, (LPP) a woman led theater company is excited to announce “Murder at the Disco Lounge” the tour. If you did not get to see the show in Louisville in June, you missed a treat. Because of the overwhelming response, Leslie Pryor and her team decides to go to the fans who may not be able to travel.

The first stop on the tour will be Lexington, KY. On Saturday, September 14th at 6:00 pm. The show will take place at the Tates Creek Ballroom, 1400 Gainesway Drive.  There will be only one show taking place at this beautiful venue. If you are not familiar with “Murder at the Disco Lounge” let’s set the scene for you. The production takes you to the disco era of the 1970s where everyone listened to Donna Summer, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Bee Gees and Sister Sledge. While wearing afros along with bright fluorescent colors and patterned ‘hot pants’, and halter-neck tops and of course platform shoes. They wore pretty much anything that made them standout. While enjoying the good times an incident takes place.  Turning the disco lounge into a crime scene and murder mystery. Where the audience will help solve the case.

“Murder at the Disco Lounge,” is a gripping mystery from jealousy, ambition, to betrayal and it will all unfold before the audience.  The tale that will keep theatergoers on the edge of their seats.

The show was created by Leslie Pryor of Leslie Pryor Productions. The CEO and founder of the production company also wrote and directs this show.  Pryor says, “If you dream, have confidence and study your craft anything is possible. I’m blessed to also have such a gifted group of actors that helped bring my vision to life. Come prepared to participate it really does bring an exciting element. I hope to see you in Lexington and other towns across the bluegrass.”

Not only are we asking you to participate but dress the part.  Audience members are asked to come dressed in 70s style attire, but it’s not required.

The cast of “Murder at the Disco Lounge” is comprised of seven talented African Americans renowned actors and actresses with Kentucky roots featuring: Gwendolyn Evans, Delane Bracken, Marquita Howerton, Gwen Jeffrey, and Reggie Johnson. We also welcome new actors to LPP, K.G. and Evit Emerson who appeared on the TVOne series Fatal Attraction.

The show will be hosted by Lexington’s own super star Comedienne LCFunny. The show will feature area singers, dancers, a best-dress contest, and a heavy hors d’oeuvres bar.

Pryor also says, “While we are enjoying the show, you will learn some signs and symptoms when it comes to a family member and/or friend maybe experiencing a mental health crisis. We need to look out for another and understand what we are seeing and get the person medical attention for the disorder.”

Mental illness is a blanket category because there’s at least ten different disorders from anxiety, depression, bipolar, eating, post-traumatic stress disorder, (PTSD) to neurodevelopmental.  According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness, (NAMI) one in five U.S. adults experience mental illness each year.  In Kentucky, 746,000 adults have a mental condition.  To put into perspective that’s more than 10 times the population of Bowling Green, KY.

NAMI also says that while mental illness affects people of all cultural backgrounds, access to quality mental health services are often out of reach for those in minority communities, leaving many undiagnosed, untreated or undertreated. Its also a known fact that many in the Black community tend not to reach out for assistance.

So, we invite you for an evening of mystery and awareness at “Murder at the Disco Lounge”,

Tickets range from $40-$55. VIP tickets offer exclusive perks for those seeking an elevated experience. Group rates are also available.  There will be no refunds for any ticket purchases.  Guest must be at least 18 years old to attend this event.  Do not miss this extraordinary event!
